Your Rights and Responsibilities

When You Move

Your Rights and Responsibilities: At a Glance

Provided by Déménagement Le Capitaine, as Required by Federal Law.

Estimates and Costs

  • Written Estimates Only: Never rely on a verbal quote. We provide written, signed, and dated estimates.

  • Binding Estimate: The price is guaranteed for the items and services listed.

  • Non-Binding Estimate: The final cost is based on actual weight. At delivery, you are only required to pay up to 110% of the original estimate. Remaining charges are billed 30 days later.

  • Physical Survey: If you are within 50 miles of our office, we must perform a physical inspection of your goods to ensure price accuracy.

Protecting Your Goods

You must choose your level of liability before loading:

  • Full Value Protection (Recommended): The most comprehensive option. We will repair, replace, or pay for the replacement of damaged items.

  • Released Value Protection (60 cents/lb): This is free but provides minimal coverage (e.g., a 100 lb TV is only covered for $60).

  • High-Value Items: Any item worth more than $100 per pound (jewelry, antiques, electronics) must be specifically listed in writing to be covered.

Customer Responsibilities

  • Be Present: You or a representative must be available at both pickup and delivery to sign documents.

  • Check the Inventory: Carefully review the inventory list and note any damage immediately upon delivery before the movers leave.

  • Payment: Confirm the accepted form of payment (credit card, cash, etc.) before the truck arrives at the destination.

Essential Paperwork

  • Order for Service: Confirms the dates, services, and estimated price.

  • Inventory: A detailed record of every item's condition before and after the move.

  • Bill of Lading: Your formal contract—read it carefully before signing.

  • Freight Bill: The final invoice showing all charges and payments.

Claims and Disputes

  • Deadlines: You have 9 months from the delivery date to file a written claim for loss or damage.

  • Resolution: We have 30 days to acknowledge your claim and 120 days to provide a final resolution.

  • Arbitration: If a dispute cannot be settled, an arbitration program is available to resolve the issue fairly without going to court.
